Mayor of Castlebar and Fine Gael town councillor Ger Deere is calling on Mayo County Council to repair a section of Newport Road which has seen numerous traffic accidents in the recent past. The section of road in question is quite close to the entrance to the new cemetery where vehicles appear to lose control. A number of road traffic collisions have taken place at the location over the past number of months, with the most recent occurring last weekend. Local residents confirmed to Cllr Deere that a number of other accidents had occurred at the location in recent months.
“I have contacted Mayo County Council about improving the safety conditions on this particular stretch of road as it is the county council’s responsibility,” Cllr Deere said. “It appears that drivers are losing control of their vehicles on a bend and resulting in them either crashing with another car or going off the road. These collisions have led to garden walls of some houses being knocked and local residents are fearing for their safety. It is completely unacceptable that such a high number of accidents are occurring on this stretch, especially with all the extra houses that have been built in the area over the years. There are more cars and pedestrians using the road and footpaths in the area than ever before. The proximity of the new cemetery is also a further reason why this road needs to be improved because of the additional pedestrians and vehicle traffic in the area visiting the cemetery and the associated large levels of traffic when funerals are taking place."
