Castlebar gets its first cycle lane

The Mayor of Castlebar, Cllr Ger Deere Deputy Mayor, Cllr Thérèse Ruane have both got on their bikes this weekend to try out the first cycle lane in the county town. Both the Mayor and the Deputy Mayor are members of Iompar Castlebar, a group working to promote cycling and sustainable transport in the region and have warmly welcomed the new cycle lane at Davitts Terrace.

“It's really welcome that Castlebar finally has a cycle lane in the town,” Cllr Deere said. “Cycling is becoming more and more popular and using a bike is an obvious choice; it's a great way of getting around town. I commend the council on this very welcome development. We need to continue to work together to put in place safe cycle routes for the people of Castlebar. This is another step in the right direction and goes a long way towards developing Castlebar as a cycle-friendly town”.

Cllr Ruane, chairperson of Iompar Castlebar, added, “This is real progress to see cycle lanes on Davitts Terrace; we can also look forward to cycle lanes on the new Newport link road and the Westport Road in the coming months. Iompar Castlebar has been working closely with Castlebar Town Council and Mayo County Council for more than a year now in promoting cycling and cycle lanes in Castlebar. This partnership approach is really paying off. Castlebar, as a town, is a very cycle-friendly town; it's flat, without any major hills. We will continue to promote cycling and cycle lanes and sustainable transport to make Castlebar a better town for everyone”.
