Open water swimming at Old Head

Pool swimmers looking for a new challenge are invited along to Old Head beach for high-tide open water swims taking place on a weekly basis. Organised and supervised by leading swim coach Trevor Devlin, former Irish Special Olympics coach, dozens of swimmers young and old have already been enjoying the experience of deep-water swimming in groups alongside the pier.

Using a series of fishing buoys as markers, swimmers can group together according to age and experience. Typical swims are 300 metres out and around the pier which, when doubled back, make for a 600 metre swim, or 1,200 metre swim two times around. Elite swimmers cover not only the pier area but right across the beach to Black Rock, which constitutes an average 40 minute swim. All are welcome but swimming experience is necessary. Ideal for those training for triathlon. For further information contact Trevor Devlin on 087 698 8721.
