Army hopeful told garda to f**k off

A 21-year-old NUIG student, who hopes to join the army, was before Ballina District Court this week for being intoxicated in a public place.

Darren McHale, Rathglass, 10 Knockanillaun, Ballina was observed by Garda John Barrett to stand in the middle of the road on Clare Street, on July 17 at 1.30am.

When asked to move out of the middle of the road, McHale, who was intoxicated, told Garda Barrett to go f**k himself.

When the garda emerged from the patrol car to ask for McHale’s name he was told to f**k off.

The court heard that the commerce student, who has no previous convictions, hopes to join the army.

Judge Mary Devins directed that €200 be made payable to the Garda Benevolent Fund.
