Bail for supermarket smasher

A Latvian man who rammed into the outside of SuperValu, Ballinrobe, causing substantial criminal damage to a security shutter door and glass window of the store, and a stone pillar which is property of Mayo County Council, was before Ballina District Court on Tuesday.

Andris Svilans, 8 Mayfield Court, Ballinrobe drove a car into Cummins’ SuperValu, Ballinrobe on Saturday July 24 at 9.33pm, just after the shop had closed. Over €3,000 worth of damage was caused.

The unemployed ex-Russian army man, who has been living in Ireland for seven years, was granted bail by Judge Mary Devins. The judge remanded him on his own bond, to appear before Ballinrobe District Court sitting in Castlebar on September 24, for mention, to fix a date for hearing. Conditions were attached to his bail in that he must reside at his present address and sign on at Ballinrobe Garda Station, Monday to Saturday.
