A new survey from recruitment website www.irishjobs.ie has found that 27 per cent of Irish workers admitted to checking their work emails while on holidays. The survey also revealed that six per cent of workers said they would check work texts while away, and five per cent said they would ring the office while on annual leave.
But not everybody is a workaholic, with 62 per cent of those who took the survey saying they switch off completely while out of the office on annual leave. The survey found that 28 per cent of those surveyed felt that their workload went up prior to their time off, with 20 per cent saying that they could hand over their work to colleagues and 20 per cent saying that their work was not time sensitive.
“With iPhone’s and Blackberries growing in popularity it is easier than ever to keep in touch with the office when you are on holidays,” said Valerie Sorohan, marketing manager of ww.irishjobs.ie “But just because you can does not necessarily mean you should. A good break is essential for employees to return to work rested, creative, and productive. Employers should actively encourage their employees to manage their time in the run up to holidays so that they can enjoy their annual leave.”
The survey also found that the majority of Irish workers think that they don’t get enough paid leave, with 54 per cent saying they were unhappy with the amount of paid holidays they get. However when asked would they take a pay cut for more holidays 68 per cent said they would not, while 36 per cent of respondents said they did not use their full holiday entitlement.
