Mayo AC have just announced the launch of their new website www.mayoac.com The website will feature information on all aspects of the club’s activities and is a welcome addition as the club expands on all fronts. Club chairman Michael Mc Grath pointed out that, while the website has been online for some time, recently it has received a major revamp thanks mainly to the great work done by club website coordinators TJ Mc Hugh, Catherine Conway, and others.
When the revamp is complete in the coming weeks it is intended that it will include up to date information on activities including fixtures, results, reports, and league tables. It already includes lots of photographs of members in action in various events including the AAI national 10k in Dublin last April. It will also include a section on profiles of the many club members and their achievements over the years.
Good results at Headford 8k
Torrential weather conditions did not dampen the spirits of the large group of Mayo AC runners who took part in the recent Headford 8k road race. First Mayo AC finisher was Brendan Gill seventh overall, just ahead of club mate Anto Devanney. While finishing 18th overall Collette Tuohy, who has recently made her name on the running scene, was an impressive winner of the women’s race in a time of 30.47.
Busy fixture list ahead
The Swinford 8K road race takes place this coming Sunday starting at 4pm, while in August there will be lots of races outside Mayo. The Ballyhaunis 8k will be race number five in the Mayo AC league on August 28.
Balla 10K brings out large number of competitors
As usual there was a good turnout with athletes from all over the country for the Balla 10k. The race was started by the Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny and the runners made their way around the tough, uncompromising course on a balmy evening on July 24. Mayo AC athlete Robert Malseed led from start to finish and was a commanding winner. Second place was secured by Ballina AC athlete Roger Barrett, who also secured a second place finish in the recent Achill half marathon. Barrett is enjoying a great season and there is plenty running to be done yet. Barrett battled with another Ballina native, Declan Fahey, in the early stages of the race. Fahey runs under the colours of Tullamore Harriers and is also enjoying a great season, having won the inaugural River Moy half marathon in his native town.
The next Ballina AC athlete over the line was Michael Canty who made his return to racing with a comfortable sixth place finish, just ahead of his clubmate Seán Gallagher. Gallagher was victorious in the over 35 category of the race. That gave the Ballina club three finishers in the top seven places.
Ballina Athletic Club Annual General Meeting
The AGM of Ballina Athletic Club was held in the community centre recently. Chairperson PJ Reilly welcomed all to the meeting. He congratulated all the athletes who represented the club during the year and wished them well for the coming year. He thanked the coaches for their trojan work throughout the year and the parents for all their support. He complimented the Fit4Life members who are now an integral part of the club and from whose ranks have emerged many senior athletes who have represented the club with distinction during the last year. Marion Mattimoe, club secretary, presented a detailed report on all the club's activities over the past year. She also outlined all the athletes achievements for 2009 which was another fantastic year for the club. Catherine Gillespie presented a detailed set of accounts to the meeting.
