Man in court after overtaking car on slow lane

A student who overtook a car in the slow lane was before Claremorris District Court this week where he faced a careless driving charge.

On October 6 2009 at 2.40pm, gardaí in Tuam were notified by Michael Butler, who was driving in the overtaking lane of the N17, that Paul Glennon, Fordrath, Athboy, Co Meath, passed him on the left side of the road, in the slow lane.

According to Lynda Lenehan, Glennon’s solicitor, she said that her client claimed that Mr Butler was not travelling at the speed limit in the overtaking lane and so Glennon was forced to overtake in the inside lane — which he did not know was illegal.

Judge Mary Devins applied the Probation Act and directed that €200 by made payable to the Irish Carers’ Association.
