Suspended sentence for man who assaulted publican

A 23-year-old man from Belcarra, Castlebar, who during a drinking binge caused havoc in the TF bar and Tolster’s bar, where he struck the bar owner on the side of the head, was given a six month prison sentence, suspended for 12 months, at Castlebar District Court this week.

At a previous sitting it was outlined that Vincent Joyce, Doonamona, Belcarra had assaulted Gerry Tolster on September 28 2009. On October 3, Joyce was also threatening and abusive at the TF Hotel bar.

At Wednesday’s sitting the court heard that Joyce has since paid compensation to Mr Tolster and has attended an intensive addiction course at Tabor House. The defendant is now attending after care and is helping out on the family farm.

For the section two assault, Judge Mary Devins convicted and sentenced Joyce to three months in prison, suspended for 12 months. For the public order charge, Judge Devins sentenced him to three months in prison consecutive, suspended for 12 months.
