Major extension for Belmullet school

A major school building project for Our Lady’s secondary school, Belmullet, has received the seal of approval from the Department of Education and Skills.

Deputy Beverley Flynn, TD said she was informed “by the Tánaiste that the major school building project for Our Lady's secondary school has been approved to proceed to apply for planning permission, fire certificate and disability access certificate.”

Deputy Flynn last week led a deputation from the school to the Minister for Education and Skills to make the case for progress on the project. The deputation comprised the school principal, Josephine Moran, and deputy principal, Edmund Holmes, together with board of management chairman John Gallagher and Tom Duffy.

The Deputy said: “My priority now is to ensure that the planning process is completed as quickly as possible so that construction work can begin without delay.”

Minister Dara Calleary also welcomed the news as he said he has been “vigorously pursuing this project since being elected in 2007 and I am delighted that my ongoing representation on behalf of the management, staff and students of the school has now been rewarded”.

Deputy Calleary explained that the project will consist of a 2,659 metre squared extension to include the provision of general classrooms, science laboratory, home economics laboratory, language laboratory, and assembly hall.
