The three-month Dáil recess at a time when unemployment is soaring has been described as shameful and completely unacceptable by a local councillor.
Sinn Fein’s Cllr. Thérèse Ruane stated: “It is wholly inexcusable that our TDs will take a three month holiday while unemployment levels are the highest they have ever been in the history of the State. This summer thousands of young people are graduating from universities, colleges and Institutes of Technology into an environment of uncertainty – no jobs and reduced welfare. We have been promised that a job creation strategy will come, but where is it?
"TDs will tell you they are not on holiday, but the Dáil is in recess, shut down for three months. When in recess, all legislation grinds to a halt, no job creation strategy can be processed. The Dáil chamber will be left empty with no one challenging the disgraceful decision to pump another €2 billion of our money into Anglo Irish Bank. There will be no parliamentary questions asked or answered on important issues such as healthcare. That is the reality of the three month holiday. It is shameful that this Government deems it acceptable to down tools for three months at a time when we are in the midst of unprecedented economic crisis. Clearly it is an indication of where this Government’s priorities lie."
