€80,000 spent on homeless in county

Eighty thousand euro is spent annually in the county dealing with homelessness, county councillors were informed during their monthly meeting on Monday.

While adopting the West Homelessness Framework Plan, senior executive officer, Martin Keating said that the main area offices in the county which deal with those who are homeless are in Castlebar, Ballina, and Westport, which generally deal with one to two cases a week.

Mr Keating said that these cases are short-term homeless cases, and annually €80,000 a year is spent supporting homeless services in the county—Mayo women’s support services and emergency bed and breakfast accommodation. Eighty per cent of this spend is recouped from the Department of Environment, Heritage and Local Government.
