Consumers advised to ensure electrical contractors are registered

The Commission for Energy Regulation (CER ) is urging people in County Mayo that when employing an electrician, they make sure to to use one of the 125 registered electricians available to them. This advice comes as part of a campaign to make people aware of the need to hire a registered electrical contractor when getting electrical work done in their home and to ask for a certificate when the work is complete, thereby promoting safety in the home.

By hiring a registered electrical contractor, people can ensure that any work carried out in their home is completed by a competent contractor who is insured and inspected as part of the Safe Electric campaign.

Independent market research conducted on behalf of the Safe Electric campaign has shown that 30 per cent of people surveyed were not aware that there are registered and unregistered electrical contractors working in Ireland.

Details of registered electrical contractors operating in County Mayo are available through www.safeelectric.ie The website also provides information for consumers on why it is important to use a registered electrical contractor and advice on how to seek redress for work which does not meet the required safety standards.
