Lady Captain’s Day at Balla
Breege Moran, with a score of 108, won the Lady Captain (Pat Dillon ) prize at Balla Golf Club at the weekend.
Second was Breege Jennings with 110 (back 18 ); third Maureen Heneghan, 111; fourth Carmel Henry, 113; fifth Nora Heraty, 114 (back 9 ); sixth Delia O’Hara, 114; seventh Kitty O’Connor, 116 (back 9 ); ninth Patricia Larkin, 116. Elaine O’Hora won the gross with a score of 132.
Breege Walsh won the beginners’ prize with Patricia Conwell coming in second. Pauline Mullen won the visitors’ prize, and Helen Cleary was second.
Julie Loftus won the prize for the best first 18 holes and Mary Brett won the prize for second 18 holes. The past captain’s winner was Mary Neary. Bernie Burke won the Nearest the Pin prize.
The youths’ winner was Merissa Brett. The junior scramble was won by Tommy Keane and Grainne Gilligan; second Patrick Burke and Rebecca Gilligan; third Shane Gaughan, Matthew Lyons, and Liam Hughes.
The men’s section was held on Saturday and saw Jackie Heneghan with a score of 52 winning the first prize. Second was Aodan MacSuibhne, 53; third Pat Walsh, 54; fourth Fentan Barrett 55 (back 9 ); fifth Jim Rodgers, 55 (back 9 ). Tommy Foy won the gross with 59. Paraic Cuffe won Nearest the Pin prize for the men.
Tommy Glynn was first in the visitors’ section with Brian McDonnell second. Joe Grimes won the men’s beginners’ section.

Fred Daly Cup - The Connaught final of the Fred Daly cup was played between the junior golfers of Ballina and Athenry at the weekend. Played over two legs Athenry emerged victorious in the first leg on a score line of four matches to three. Ballina turned the tables in the second leg also emerging with a 4 - 3 win. This meant the match went to a sudden death play off from which the Athenry boys emerged victorious. Great credit is due to both teams as the standard of golf and sportsmanship displayed over both days was excellent. The Athenry boys now go on to represent Connaught at All Ireland level and are wished every success from all at Ballina Golf Club.
Captains Prize - The Captain’s Prize (Mr Des Cronin ) takes place on Sunday next, July 18 and the time sheet is currently displayed on the main notice board. The draw for the competition times will be made on Tuesday evening and all players are asked to check their times. Players are encouraged to be at the first tee at least 15 minutes before they are due to tee off. A nine-hole scramble will be held on Friday and a social evening with finger food is planned for the club house that evening.

Congratulations to the Irish mixed foursomes team on their fine win over Castlebar in the Zone final last week. They now face Portumna in the Connacht semi final at Ballina Golf Club on July 23.
The senior team had a great win over Castlebar in the over 55s competition. They go on to meet Bearna in the Connacht semi final on Tuesday week. The team has already qualified for the Connacht semi finals of the Jimmy Carroll Trophy. Congratulations is also due to the Cecil Ewing team that defeated Ballinrobe 3/2 over the weekend.
The club will hold a junior summer camp in the practice area of Claremorris Golf Club on Wednesday July 28, Thursday July 29, and Friday July 30.
The fee is: €40 per child payable in advance (members and non-members ). The camp will cater for children from seven years to 13 years. The camp will involve coaching with PGA Professional Jimmy Heggarty. The art of chipping, putting, long game and short game will all be covered in the camp. There will be competitions with prizes on the final day of the camp. Children should bring along runners and rainwear.
Clubs and balls are supplied if required. This is a great opportunity to acquire the fundamentals of the game at an affordable price.
Children will also enjoy the fun factor of the camp.

Competition co-ordinator Christy O’Malley was delighted with the support shown by the members to the annual CROI fundraiser, played on Sunday last. Liam Halpin secured his first competition victory of the season, following his return to competitive golf earlier this year. Jack O’Donnell’s fine season continues and must go into the junior Captain’s Prize as a strong favourite, on current form. Next week gents’ competition will be the Hastings Insurance GOY.
Members are advised that the timesheet for the Captain’s Prize (John Collins ) is now open. The competition may be played on Saturday July 24 (12.36 to 15.56 ) or Sunday July 25 (07.00 to 13.00 ). Full details of the competition format will be published prior to the competition.
The 2010 Open Week timesheet was also opened during the week. The week will take place from Friday July 30 to Sunday August 8 inclusively. The fee for members will be €7 and visitors will be €25. Again the Open Week timetable will be published next week.
A reminder that the Jack O’Sullivan team will play Achill on Thursday next in the third round of their competition. There are three matches at home and support at either venue would be most welcome by team manager Eugene Lavelle and all the players.
Gerry Hughes, the competition’s chairman, has posted the draw sheets for both the Carrowholly Cup competition and the Phillips Cup. There is a huge entry in this year’s Phillips Cup and this should help Neil Chambers with his Cecil Ewing selection for later in the month.
