Women stole whiskey from shop

Two women who took three bottles of whiskey from a shop in Castlebar were before Castlebar District Court this week.

Tina McDonagh, 47 Springfield Court, Castlebar, and Winnie McDonagh, 56 An Sruthan, Castlebar, entered Londis Plus, Castlebar on March 23, where they hid the bottles under their jumpers and walked out. One bottle was recovered.

Tina McDonagh was also before the court for stealing soup to the value of €10 from Supersavers, Moneen, Castlebar, on October 20 2009.

The court heard that Tina McDonagh, a married mother of one, has seven previous convictions, including a suspended sentence, which was imposed in Galway District Court. Judge Mary Devins remanded her to appear before this court on Monday July 14.

Winnie McDonagh has 35 previous convictions (18 for theft ). The 27-year-old, married mother of one has served custodial sentences, however according to her solicitor Cathy McDarby “this is wasting taxpayers’ money”. McDonagh has just served a short time in the Dóchas Centre, which was just enough time for her to “get her hair and nails done” in jail, she said.

The court heard that this defendant was on temporary release when she committed this offence and is currently a prisoner at large.

Judge Devins remanded McDonagh on continuing bail to September 1 for sentencing.
