One of Ireland's most prestigious beauty contests has just been launched to find the most beautiful cow in the country.
Groomed and pampered contestants from all over Ireland will wear their county sashes with pride as they parade in front of the judges at the Virginia Show, in County Cavan on July 31 in the hope of winning the title of the ‘Bailey’s Irish Champion Cow’.
More than 20 top Holstein Friesian beauties are expected on the shortlist to win the €8,000 prize fund. Superior milk production is a must for short-listing but final judgment on the day, according to competition director Brendan Smyth, will be on looks alone with marks going for shapely legs, an elegant neck, good-shaped back, and well proportioned udders.
“Never mind the World Cup. For breeders, winning ‘the Baileys®’ is like having a horse win at the Grand National,” he quipped.
