After several weeks of tough competition, the overall champions of the inaugural Claremorris Colts RFC Tag League will be decided this evening (Friday, July 9 ). After the semi-finals on Friday last, there are now just two teams in contention for the cup, so Guten Tag and the Relentless Drillers have it all to play for. There was great excitement at the Mount St Michael Convent pitch last Friday evening, as the 11 teams came together to battle it out for places in the cup, shield, and bowl finals. And, as spectators lined the sidelines to shout for their favourite teams, the pressure was greater than ever.
At 7pm, the cup semi-finals were played. Guten Tag overcame I don’t know, what do you think? on a scoreline of 19-8, while the Relentless Drillers beat the Pink Panthers 16-13.
There were also four teams looking for a place in the shield final and Robe Ruckers took on the Hunks and the Honeys, with the game finishing 25-11 in favour of the Hunks and the Honeys. Meanwhile the McWilly Warriors beat Hunky Dorys 23-8. This Friday, the games will begin at 6.30pm, with the grand final taking place at 8.10pm. Of course, as well as the finals for the cup, shield, and bowl, teams will also be meeting in play-offs to establish which finishes third and fourth in each contest.
At 7.15pm the shield final will be played, with the McWilly Warriors coming up against the Hunks and the Honeys. This will be 20 minutes a side. The cup final is scheduled to take place at 8.30pm at the Convent pitch, with Relentless Drillers taking on Guten Tag. This is certain to be a close encounter and all eyes will be on this game to see who takes home the coveted cup. Like the shield final, this game will be 20 minutes each side. The presentation ceremony will take place later tonight in the bar of The Western Hotel and a great night of fun and banter is guaranteed. As well as the cup, shield, and bowl, awards for the male and female player of the league will be made on the night, as well as prizes for the team with the best kit and the team with the best name.
