Cycling for all events lined up around the county

This week Western Lakes Cycling Club launched its three main events of the year in Inches Bar, Ballinrobe. Over the past five years these events have grown from strength to strength, and Western Lakes CC hopes that this year will be no different. The three events are the Polkadot leisure cycle challenge which will be held on July 18, the Ballinrobe two day event on August 7 and 8, and the Mayo Sports Partnership cycle to the castle on September 12 which will be part of the Mayo cycle for fun series. More information on that below.

Cycling fun series

With cycling is fast becoming one of the most popular forms of recreational physical activity, Mayo Sports Partnership in conjunction with the Irish Sports Council, Western Lakes Cycling Club, North Mayo Cycling Club, Castlebar Cycling Club, and the Covey Wheelers Cycling Club in Westport is inviting families and anyone who would like to try cycling as a fun physical activity to participate in the Mayo cycle for fun series. Both North Mayo and Castlebar Cycling Clubs will commence their activities this Sunday, July 4, with the others timetabled in August and September. Participants will need a bicycle and a helmet but if you do not have access to this equipment and would like to take part contact the local organiser as he/she may be able to arrange some bike hire on the day. Loose clothing and a drink would also be useful. All groups will provide some refreshments as part of the event. A small entry fee may vary from event to event, however it will cost no more than €2 per child and €5 per adult with a flat charge of €5 per family. Funds raised this way will go towards the local clubs’ costs in organising the event.

It is recommended that all participants should be aged 10 or over. All children must be accompanied by an adult/parent. Contact the local organiser to confirm this as individual clubs may differ on policy in this regard. The Ballina cycle for fun event is being organised by the North May Cycling club and will take place this Sunday July 4 at 2.30pm. This leisure event will take in a 20km course, starting from the new bridge on Weir Road, Ballina, and costs €2 for children and €5 for adults. For more information contact Martin Walsh on 087 2995 172. The Castlebar event, which is being organised by Castlebar Cycling Club, is a 16km introduction to cycling which will take place on Sunday, July 4, at 10am. The event will depart from the TF Royal, for more information contact Donal Geraghty on 087 9672327.
