Last weekend’s Stableford competition sponsored by Lawnmower and Tool Hire, Castlebar, was won by Gary Heneghan with a score of 43, Oliver Moran came second on 40, and Michael Durkan third on 39. The ladies’ section was won by Mary Fahy with a score of 40, Mary Gillard came second with 36, and Kitty O’Connor third on 35. The category prize went to Carmel Henry who hit a 32 on the back nine. The youths’ section was claimed by Marissa Brett with a score of 19. This weekend’s competition is being sponsored by Durkan’s Bar, Balla, and the Lady Captain’s prize will take place on Sunday July 11. A time sheet will be in operation for this event and posted in the club house. The draw for the junior and senior scratch cups has been made players should check the notice board in clubhouse for your match.
Ballina
The Vice Captain's prize took place last Sunday in splendid conditions. One hundred and sixteen players participated and the green keeper and his staff deserve tremendous praise for the condition of the course. The competition, which was sponsored by Rory Quinn Jewellers, saw Eddie Keigher win out with a score of 63 nett, Michael O’Malley came second with a round of 65 nett. Des Farrell came third with a score of 66 nett, while the gross prize went to Brendan Kilgallon. The Cat 1 prize was won by Sean Walsh, with Keith Cronin taking the Cat 2 section and Pat Joyce the Cat 3. The front nine competition win went to Craig Doherty with Mick Forde taking the back nine.
Claremorris
This weekend in Claremorris the Lady Captain’s prize will take place on Sunday July 4. In last weekend’s competition Fergal Hughes was the winner with 40pts, with Derek Walsh taking the Cat 1, Niall McCarthy the Cat 2, and Padraig Naughton the Cat 3 prize. The ladies’ competition was won by Una Clarke with a score of 74 nett and Claire Naughton took second place on 61 nett.
Westport
Anna May McCreave captured the Lady Captain’s prize on Saturday last with a Stableford score of 41pts, playing off 20. More than 60 competitors participated in the event but McCreave performance of 24pts on the back nine secured the most coveted prize in the ladies’ golfing calendar. A special mention for Laura Friel who birdied 17th and 18th, thus ensuring a Kilmeena and Carrowholly first and second on the day. In her speech Lady Captain June Mathastein expressed special thanks to her husband Roger and all her family for their support during the year.
Dates are now finalised for three junior golf camps over the coming weeks; July 5 and 6, July 26 and 27, and August 16 and 17. Areas of the game to be covered include: putting, chipping, pitching, and swing building delivered by certified PGA professionals. In addition, all juniors will receive a tee gift, snack pack, a great experience, and lots of fun. The camps are suited to both male and female juniors seven to 15 years of age. Groups will be organised by age. The fee per child will be €50.
