Charlestown decentralisation plan continues

The plan to transfer the Department of Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs to Charlestown, with its 130 jobs, remains Government policy, according to Beverley Flynn, TD.

She said that despite the Department being located in Tubbercurry as a temporary measure, the long term plan was that it be located in Charlestown.

Deputy Flynn was speaking following a demand in the Dáil from Fine Gael that the Tubbercurry situation be made permanent, and that the Charlestown plan be abandoned.

“The Government has reaffirmed its commitment to Charlestown, and the question of permanently settling in Tubbercurry does not arise,” she said.

The initial intention was to locate the Department at Knock Airport, but Charlestown became the preferred location when Knock was ruled not feasible.
