Man disqualified for going to get fuel while intoxicated

A 20-year-old man from Lahardane who, when intoxicated, went to get fuel in his car, has been disqualified from driving for two years.

On Tuesday, Ballina District Court heard that on December 24 2009 at 3.45am, Garda Pauric Kelly stopped John Joseph Harte, Pullawarla, Boffenaun, Lahardane, from driving after he noticed the defendant cross over a continuous white line and enter the Lionbridge Car Park without any indication.

Harte was arrested for drink driving and a urine sample provided showed 177mg of alcohol per 100ml of urine.

Solicitor Aidan Crowley said that the apprentice electrician had run low on fuel coming into town that night and on the way home from a night out he drove his car into Ballina to go to a petrol station.

Judge Mary Devins convicted and fined the defendant €400 and disqualified him from driving for two years.
