Castlebar town councillor Harry Barrett has welcomed improvement works on the Pontoon Road, however his fellow town councillor Ger Deere has called on the town council to make further improvements to another section of the Pontoon Road.
Currently, resurfacing works are being carried out on the road in response to many residents' complaints in relation to subsidence of the roadway and waterlogging in poor weather.
Labour Cllr Barrett said that he had made numerous complaints about the state of waterlogging on this road which could have led to an accident and he is now happy to see that these issues are being rectified.
Fine Gael Cllr Deere said that the road section from the entrance of the Brambles to the junction at the Curradrish Road needs the margin overgrowth removed or a footpath put in place as many pedestrians use this narrow section of road as a walking route that links the Turlough Road to the Pontoon Road.
“Obviously there are financial constraints to be considered here and that a full footpath may not be possible but it should be feasible to remove the overgrowth,” Cllr Deere said. “This would make some form of pedestrian space that removes the need for them to walk on the road. It is only a short section of roadway in question here and as there are roadworks currently under way on the same road, it could be easily incorporated to the improvements. I think now is the ideal time with the current roadworks under way and in advance of the Castlebar Four Day Walks festival.”
