Nearly 200 Mayo motorists scrapped their 10-year-old cars and purchased a brand new 2010 model in the first five months of the year. The scrappage scheme was brought in by the Government to help the ailing motor industry, which had seen a number of high profile closures of dealerships and massive job losses since the economic downturn.
The county by county breakdown shows that Mayo accounted for 2.69 per cent of the total number of new cars purchased under the scheme so far this year, with 198 pre 2000 registered cars being scrapped.
Compared to its Connacht neighbours Mayo had the second highest number of cars scrapped, behind Galway which had 416 people avail of the scheme, while Leitrim saw only 42 people scrap their cars. Nationally there was a total of 7,368 new cars purchased under the scrappage scheme with Dublin by far and away the leader on 1,758.
