The Council for the West— a voluntary, independent, non-political lobby group — is to continue to fight for the retention of the Western Development Commission following what it termed a “positive meeting” with Minister for Community, Equality and Gaeltacht Affairs Pat Carey in Dublin this week.,
The deputation was led by chairman Sean Hannick, who along with other members expressed his concerns at any attempt to lessen the role of the commission, as the rationalisation of some State bodies was proposed by An Bord Snip Nua.
After the meeting Mr Hannick said the delegation was assured of the Minister’s understanding of the issues affecting the west in general, and of the case for the retention of the WDC, however Minister Carey was unable to give a commitment for the retention of the WDC.
The comprehensive submission which was presented to the Minister, A Case for the Retention of the Western Development Commission, is available on The Council for the West’s website www.councilforthewest.ie
