Mayo Student triumphs in Digital Hub competition

A Mayo student was celebrating this week after he and his team-mates were named overall winners in The Digital Hub’s Best in Show competition, bagging a €1,000 cash prize and work placements in one of Ireland’s leading digital media companies. Aaron Chalke from Ballintubber – who has just finished his final exams in the BSc in multimedia course at Dublin City University – entered the competition along with three of his classmates from DCU. Their team was announced as category winners in the film and video production category of the Best in Show competition last week. This meant all four students will get work placements this summer with Red Diamond Media, a digital media group based in The Digital Hub which focuses on TV, radio and web production, and digital content creation.

As category winners, Mr Chalke and his team-mates also went forward for an online public vote to decide the overall winners of Best in Show 2010. Commenting on his team’s success, Aaron Chalke said the possibility of winning a work placement in a leading digital media company was what enticed them to enter Best in Show in the first place.

“We’re all just finished college now and starting to look for jobs, and – as everyone knows – it isn’t really the best time to be a graduate looking for work. So we were really pleased that part of what Best in Show was offering category-winners was a two-week work placement. Getting that sort of experience is so important to have on your CV when it comes to job interviews in the future. Last week, we found out our entry had won the Film and Video Production category of the competition and, of course, we were thrilled. Now we’ve found out that we also topped the online public vote and win €1,000, which is fantastic news. We’re all delighted, and we’re really looking forward to starting our work placements with Red Diamond Media.”
