Killala soccer star Aileen Gilroy is part of the Republic of Ireland side that made it through to the UEFA u17 European Championships final this week. Ireland beat Germany 1-0 in the semi-final in Nyon in Switzerland on Tuesday. They will now face off against Spain in the final European Championships final on Saturday at 12.30pm. For soccer fans looking to see the game, it will be broadcast live on Eurosport. By making it all the way to the final the Irish girls have booked their place in next year’s FIFA u18 World Cup which will take place in Trinidad and Tobago.
Milebush to host seven-a-side competition
The Milebush Cup is a seven-a-side competition which is about to get under way in Milebush Omnigrass. This competition is being run along the same format as the successful Masters League which took place over the winter months, it is geared for players who are not registered with the Mayo League. The competition organiser Des Walsh reports that a number of sides have already signed up, such as Insignia Plus, Coke United, Irish Housers, the Special Ones, and the Invincibles. The competition will start on or about July 1 and it is intended to run the competition through to the end of August or early September. The winners will receive the Milebush Cup and Umbro sports vouchers.
