Mayo AC and Swinford AC have joined forces to host the first ever ‘Fit4life’ 5km Summer Series over three Wednesdays in June and July. The series, which is also supported by the Mayo Sports Partnership, will kick off next Wednesday, June 30 in Castlebar. From there it will move on to Swinford on July 7 and finish up in Claremorris on July 14. Proceedings will get under way each evening at 8pm sharp and Country Harvest Fruit and Veg Store in Claremorris is sponsoring the event.
Everyone is welcome to take part. The cost of participation is €8 or just €20 if you take part in all three 5km events and this will include a barbecue on the final night in Claremorris. Each participant will get one race number and keep this race number for each of the three walks/runs. The emphasis is on fun and participation and Mayo AC, Swinford AC along with Mayo Sports Partnership would like to invite everyone to participate. The event is open to people of all abilities. DeCare Dental five mile run
The ninth annual DeCare Dental five mile race will take place in Claremorris on Saturday evening June 26 with the starter’s pistol sounding at 6pm. The event is race number two in the Mayo AC road race league and the course will be slightly modified from last year to ensure that it is the AAI approved distance. Race headquarters will be at the Dalton Inn, showers and changing rooms will be available close to race headquarters. Each entrant will receive a commemorative T-shirt and refreshments will be served afterwards. While this is a competitive race, the organisers are also keen to remind people that it is open to all levels of walker, jogger or runner. There is a prize fund for the winners of the different categories on the day as well as points in the Mayo AC Road Race League. Byrne and Mayo men on fire in Longford
County Longford Athletic Club hosted the Summer Running Series 10 mile road race on Sunday June 13. John Byrne, Mayo AC’s top seed, finished in poll position in Longford in a time of 53:26. Brendan Gill took third place position in a time of 59:47 followed by Paddy O’Toole in 62:10, Anto Devanney finished in sixth place in 64:50 followed very closely by Mayo AC’s ever improving Gerry Galvin who took first place in the over 40 category in a time of 64:53.
Catherine wins in Bohermeen, Co. Meath
Catherine Conway finished in first place in the senior women’s 5km race in Bohermeen, Co. Meath last week in a personal best of 17:28. Over 550 people participated in this 5km event. TJ Mc Hugh Mayo AC also ran a PB and finished in the top 10 men in a time of 16:09.
