The Royal Castlebar Theatre and Event Centre are delighted to present a performance by music legends The Chieftains on Friday October 24.
With a career that spans 46 years and 43 albums, The Chieftains are not only Ireland’s premier musical ambassadors but also the most enduring and influential creative force in establishing the international appeal of Celtic music.
In 1962, Paddy Moloney, combined Ireland’s best in folk and traditional music and brought them to the world stage with their own unique and definitive style. The Chieftains have won six Grammy awards and, since 1975 have been touring the world performing and recording with many of music’s top recording artists including; Sting, Joni Mitchell, The Rolling Stones, Elvis Costello, Diana Krall, Alison Krauss, Emmy Lou Harris and many more.
The familiar line-up of The Chieftains is made up of master fiddler Seán Keane, who joined in 1968 and bodhrán player Kevin Conneff was enlisted in 1976. Despite joining the group almost 30 years ago, Matt Molloy is the newest member of The Chieftains A native of county Roscommon, Molloy is widely recognized as the best flute player in Irish traditional music. Matt and family have lived in Westport for many years where, sadly, his wife Geraldine recently passed away.
The line-up is completed by The Chieftains’ founder and leader, Paddy Moloney. Though he still plays the tin whistle, Paddy’s musical journey has centred around his talent with the pipes, as well as around his compositions and arrangements of material for The Chieftains. Moloney has remained the constant force behind the group’s success and legendary status, and is enthusiastic about the future and about their place in the larger musical world.
