A benefit concert in aid of a Castlebar nun for her work with the poor in Haiti is to take place in the Church of the Holy Rosary later this month.
Sr Rose (Veena ) Kelly, originally from the Westport road has been working in Haiti for five years and is currently in Jean Rabel, a town of 500,000 population 37kms northwest of the capital Port au Prince.
Known as the ‘Hungry Town’, Sister Veena’s parish was badly hit by the recent earthquakes resulting in serious homelessness and a lack of access and food for the population.
The benefit event is being organised by Soroptimists Castlebar, part of Soroptimist International, a dynamic organisation for professional and business women committed to helping women and girls achieve their full potential. Through international partnerships and a global network of members, Soropotimists inspire action and create opportunities to transform the lives of women and girls by increasing access to education and developing leadership and practical skills.
The concert will feature a programme of classical and Irish music presented by Grainne Hambly on Irish harp and Siobhan Kilkelly on the organ. Sr Veena is sister of Anthony and Hilary and the late Finbar Kelly of Maryland. Her early education was at St Angela’s National School and Gortnor Abbey, Crossmolina, and her parents formerly ran a popular shop on the Main Street in Castlebar.
The concert takes place on June 24 at 8pm. Tickets at €15 are available from Sheila on 087 6812011 or Noreen on 087 9977307 or at the church door on the night. All donations are greatly accepted and all support will be greatly appreciated.
