Rowdy behaviour disturbs Westport campsite

The grounds of Westport House were subject to rowdy behaviour by youths during the week when gardaí and the fire brigade had to be called to the campsite on the estate.

The campsite which has full occupancy in the current high season was severely disrupted on Tuesday night after up to 20 youths ran around causing a disturbance from 10pm on. Westport gardaí who called to the scene made a number of arrests for underage drinking, and a bonfire started near the trees had to be put out by fire officers.

“The abuse shouted at gardaí and in front of families camping at the campsite was just horrendous,” said one witness. “Most of the disruption was outside the fence bordering the campsite, but still on Westport House estate and it created a nuisance for everyone. It is very unfortunate because incidents like these give the facility such a bad press with visitors travelling here, when usually there is such a lovely atmosphere at the camp.”

Sgt Denis Harrington of Westport gardaí confirmed there was an incident of underage drinking and the fire brigade had to be called as a matter of course due to the fire being started near trees.
