The proposed parking charges for Murrisk car-park next to Croagh Patrick have been changed following lobbying of council officials.
Westport acting manager, Martin Keating, informed members of Westport Electoral Area Committee this week that a number of letters had been received expressing concern with the proposed charge system. “There were concerns that the hourly charge system would pose a risk of injury to climbers who might rush if they felt they were running out of time. It would not be our intention to monitor the car park to that extent so I can alleviate people’s concerns in that regard. We now suggest an amendment to a maximum four hour stay for €2.50, up to a total maximum stay of eight hours.”
Members ratified the suggestion deeming it a fair decision with chairman Cllr Johnny O’Malley commenting: “If they can’t climb the reek up and down in eight hours then I don’t think they should be climbing it at all.”
