Speed limit still sought at Carrowkennedy

Councillors in Westport have called on the National Roads Authority to overturn a decision not to implement a 60km speed limit at Carrowkennedy on the Leenane Road following complaints of dangerous speeding in the area.

Cllr Margaret Adams told Westport Electoral Area officials this week that locals had to take their life in their hands moving through the school, church, and community centre, and wanted it explained how a speed reduction could not be imposed as had been done on a section of road between Newport and Mulranny.

Acting town manager Martin Keating said the application had been submitted and not deemed appropriate by the NRA. “We can re-submit and will certainly do that,” he said.

Cllr Peter Flynn said the council should go ahead and put up speed signs anyway. “I don’t think the NRA will come down to remove them, because my belief is that they don’t give two monkeys about what we do down here.”
