The Mayo League has donated the proceeds of its inaugural charity shield match which took place at the start of this season in Milebush Park, Castlebar. The shield was named in honour of the late Liam McEntee and was competed for by Ballina Town (Elverys Super league champions ) and Manulla (Chadwicks Cup Holders ). Ballina Town became the first winners on a score line of 2-1.

Mayo League officers Padraig McHale and Pat Quigley were on hand to present a cheque to Angela Kirrane in Rock Rose House on Tuesday evening last. Rock Rose House was the nominated charity for 2010 and the league was delighted to donate the proceeds from the match, which amounted to €2,500, to an organisation which provides much needed support to families affected by cancer.

The chairman of the MAFL Padraig McHale thanked all who supported this worthy cause in particular supporters who attended the match, clubs, and club members who sold match tickets, the referees who donated their fees and all who made contributions to the fund. It is intended to make this an annual event and the 2011 charity shield match will take place in Milebush Park next spring between the Super League Champions and the winners of the Connacht Gold Cup.
