Terrific outing for Mayo Scouts at Westport House

Over 200 children with 50 adult supervisors camped out in Westport House over the beautiful sunny bank holiday weekend as part of the Mayo Scouts annual county outing.

The event was a huge success and brilliant fun for all involved, reported Westport group leader and county co-ordinator, Una Canning.

Mayo Scouts consist of nine groups, five of which were represented in the camp-out including Achill, Castlebar, Snugboro, Ballinrobe and Westport with scouts ranging in age from six to 15.

“It’s a two-nighter we do every year when we go around to different places in Mayo. Last year we had a field in Mayo but Westport House was very good value this year and the football pitch a perfect location. Even though all the activities were open at the house we had our own scout activities away from the public which the children really enjoyed.”

Activities included a very popular water slide made from tarpaulin covered with washing-up liquid and water. There were also some great arts and crafts activities with the making of a ‘ball-catcher’ from an old milk carton proving a real hit.

“The amount of fun they got from making something so simple was unbelievable. On Saturday night then we had three ventures with older lads helping with the camp fire. Combined with the great weather and the excellent location, we had a brilliant camp this year and everyone enjoyed it.”
