Castlebar river bank collapse

The collapse of parts of the Castlebar River bank has affected a number of business premises in the town and the matter has now been referred to the Office of Public Works for remedial work.

According to Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny, confirmation has been received from Minister Martin Mansergh with responsibility for the Office of Public Works that they have been contacted by Mayo County Council regarding the collapse of certain parts of the Castlebar River bank. An application for remedial works funding from the council under the minor flood mitigation works scheme is now to be made in a bid to have the damaged sections repaired. Some of the damaged sections are undermining some commercial buildings in the town as well as being in close proximity to a sewerage mains which may be damaged if further erosion occurs.

“I welcome that the Office of Public Works is taking the project into consideration because there was serious confusion about who was responsible for these repairs,” Deputy Kenny said. “I hope this matter is resolved in the near future.”
