A man who drove at speed in the centre of Castlebar, and almost ran over a woman who was trying to cross over the road, was convicted of dangerous driving at Castlebar District Court this week.
A report was made to Garda Declan Casey on February 22 by a woman who said that, while trying to cross the road on Castle Street at around 1.20pm, she was forced to jump out of the way of a car being driven at high speed. An independent witness also observed the incident. The car was driven by John McDonagh, 2 Castle Hill Park, Turlough Road, Castlebar.
The 26-year-old married father of two drove at speed as he had a row with his in-laws and drove away from the row as he was in fear of his safety.
Judge Aeneas McCarthy said that “had he knocked the woman down at speed he would have killed her”. The judge convicted and fined McDonagh €500 and disqualified him from driving for two years.
