There was great sadness at the Sacred Heart Hospital in Castlebar recently when much-loved lifetime resident, Joe McAndrew, suddenly passed away.
Paying tribute on behalf of hospital staff, Eveleen Moran, assistant director of nursing, said Joe had been a resident in the Sacred Heart Hospital for many years where his gentle manner and acceptance of life endeared him to fellow residents, staff and all members of the public he came in contact with.
“The Sacred Heart Hospital was his home and the staff were his family and Joe always had a welcoming word for everyone he met.
“There is real sadness now he is no longer with us but we know he is keeping an eye on us from heaven. Joe was always keen to participate in all activities. He had recently been to a garden centre with a member of staff where he had seen animals and birds. He always remembered to bring a present back to friends in the Sacred Heart Hospital and relay happy stories of the day.”
Over the years Joe was included in day trips and parties hosted by The Friends of the Sacred Heart Hospital and was always happy to play music and join in the dancing.
“He had been to Lourdes and frequently to Knock and his love of Our Lady was ever evident. He was always very helpful in the Church and happy to lend a helping hand where needed. May his gentle soul rest in peace,” said Ms Horan.
Joe McAndrew died unexpectedly on May 11 last in the loving care of the staff in St Patrick’s Unit at the hospital. Month’s Mind Mass will be celebrated in the church of the Sacred Heart Hospital this Sunday morning, June 6 at 10.30am. All are welcome.
