Main Street in Newport a ‘total embarrassment’

The state of the road surface on Main Street in Newport after the hot weather is a “total embarrassment” according to Belmullet area councillor, Michael Holmes.

The Independent councillor said that the street was littered with potholes after the cold snap, however the tar which was used to patch the potholes was boiling from the heat at the weekend, making the street almost impossible to manoeuvre. The councillor said that the knock on effect from this is that tourists will not stop in the town. Castlebar councillor Blackie Gavin said that he also received many complaints about the state of the road over the weekend.

Director of services Joe Beirne said that €100,000 has been secured for the Newport streets and work is being arranged to commence as soon as possible.
