A man who attacked a man dressed as a Tellytubby in an unprovoked assault was before Castlebar District Court this week for the assault charge.
Gardaí were informed on Monday October 26 2009, that Keith Murray had been attacked by Michael Flynn, 33 Rowan Drive, Castlebar, at 3am that day on Linenhall Street as Mr Murray waited for a taxi. Mr Murray said that Flynn came around the corner onto Linenhall Street and punched him in the face for no reason.
In a statement given to gardaí, Flynn said that he had been drinking since 12 noon that day and spent the entire day drinking. The defendant said that he attacked Murray as he was led to believe that a person, who was dressed as a green Tellytubby, had hit an acquaintance of Flynn earlier that night. However, as there was a fancy dress party on in Castlebar there were a number of men dressed as the green Tellytubby and Flynn had assaulted an “innocent Tellytubby”.
Aidan Crowley, solicitor for the defendant, said that his client intends to go to Australia this weekend for two years. Flynn has no previous convictions.
Mr Crowley had €1,000 cash in court to present to the injured party and Mr Murray accepted the cash.
Judge Mary Devins said that as €1,000 has been made available to the injured party she would apply the Probation Act and said to Flynn: “I suggest that you don’t get so incredibly drunk in Australia.”
