The proposed N5 linking Westport and Castlebar will not have a turn off for Islandeady on it because traffic movements does not justify it. At the May monthly meeting of Castlebar Electoral Area Committee it was reported that Islandeady had 800 recorded traffic movements in a survey was carried out last July, and the NRA requires 1,000 daily traffic movements to justify a turn off.
The meeting was also told that a turn off would cost in the region of €1 million. Fine Gael councillor Eugene McCormack stated it was not a good thing that a major route would be going through a village adding that there were ‘81 businesses in the village of Islandeady’ that would be affected.
