Drunk man refused to leave bookies

A man with 44 previous convictions was given concurrent prison sentences by Judge Mary Devins this week, for public order offences which took place when the man was drunk.

The court heard that Derek Humber, 31 Tyrawley Terrace, Ballina, was intoxicated on Lord Edward Street on January 29 2009, and failed to leave the area when directed by gardaí to do so.

On February 1 2009 on Pearse Street at 2.30am, the defendant was abusive to gardaí, and on December 21 2009 at 3.05pm Humber shouted at Garda Martin McNicholas while the garda was on traffic duty. The same day at 3.15pm, gardaí were notified that Humber, who was intoxicated, refused to leave Celtic Bookmakers on Tone Street. After being escorted from the premises, the defendant refused to leave the area and was threatening to gardaí.

Humber is currently serving a three month prison sentence which was imposed at Castlebar District Court last week, and Judge Devins sentenced him to 28 days concurrent for each of the four public order charges.
