A fisherman who struck a man in the face outside Supermac’s, Ballina, was given a suspended sentenced in relation to the matter and for a criminal damage charge at Ballina District Court this week.
Stephen Rooney, 68 Castlefield Manor, Ballina, was observed by gardaí to strike a man in the face on April 18 2010 outside Supermac’s at 2.50am. The injured party did not make a statement in relation to the matter.
Solicitor, John Gordon, said his client hit the man as the man informed Rooney he had cut the mooring ropes to his (Rooney’s ) boat and had called the defendant’s girlfriend an unpleasant name.
Sentencing in relation to a criminal damage charge, where the defendant threw a stone through a window, was also adjourned to Tuesday’s court sitting.
Rooney, who is a fisherman and who according to his solicitor has turned his life around, was convicted and fined €500 by Judge Mary Devins for the criminal damage charge, and was sentenced to three months in jail; suspended for 12 months.
The defendant was also sentenced to 28 days in prison concurrent for the public order charge, which was also suspended for 12 months.
