Major fires sweep through the county

A major fire broke out on the top floor of Burleigh House, Ellison Street, Castlebar, late on Monday morning. The property, which looks out on to the Mall in the county town, housed a number of business and flats.

The emergency services were alerted to the fire at around midnight and the four flats in the building were evacuated by the emergency services. Nobody was injured in the incident.

Gardaí confirmed to the Mayo Advertiser earlier this week that a forensic team had attended the scene and there were no suspicious circumstances in relation to the fire. They also confirmed that there were five people in the flats located on the top floor of the building, one couple and three single people, who were all evacuated by the fire services.

The fire on Monday night was just one in a series that the fire services in Mayo have had to deal with over the past number of weeks. Last week a fire completely gutted an unoccupied house on Mount Street, Claremorris, which forced out a number of local residents in the vicinity. On Saturday a number of units of Mayo fire brigade had to contend with a large forest fire near Castlebar which threatened several houses nearby. Up to eight units of the fire brigade had to tackle the blaze in Ross which saw some drift towards the town. The fire was brought under control on Saturday evening, and was restarted on Monday evening when the fire service had to attend the scene once again to extinguish the blaze.
