CCTV needed for Roonagh Pier

An application for CCTV for Roonagh Pier should be supported by the council, according to Fianna Fáil Councillor Margaret Adams.

Speaking at the planning area committee meeting which met on Clare Island on Tuesday the Westport councillor said that following a spate of vandalism at Roonagh Pier last year a €4,000 CCTV system is being sought and that the council will be approached to assist with funding.

Senior executive officer Martin Keating said that any application submitted will be looked at and the council would of course be “anxious to protect the tourism sector for islanders”.

Councillor John O’Malley said that a camera is in fact “needed at every pier” and he outlined a break-in incident which took place on Sunday morning in the Carrowholly area where a car belonging to people who had parked up to go kayaking was broken into.
