Drunk man jumped on bonnet of car

An 18-year-old man, who is considering a career in the Army, was before Ballinrobe District Court last week following €250 worth of criminal damage he caused to a car when he jumped on it and kicked in a window.

On Main Street, Ballinrobe, on April 12 2009, Sergeant Mark Crehan observed two people in an altercation.

A Toyota Avensis belonging to Mr Declan Burke had been damaged by Michael Sweeney, 19 Church View, Ballinrobe.

Two other witnesses also observed Sweeney jump on the bonnet and kick in the windscreen. Sgt Crehan observed the defendant to be drunk and aggressive to Mr Burke and said “I’ll kick your head in”.

According to solicitor Cathy McDarby, the defendant was “off the rails at the time” and is now considering a future career in the Army.

Judge Mary Devins said that avoiding a conviction is useful if he wants to go down that road and adjourned sentencing to November 26 and also directed that the €500 cash bail be made available forthwith to Mr Burke.
