More disruptions at IWAK as ash cancels travel plans

Passengers were thrown into further disarray this week as their travel plans were forced to change on Wednesday following the cancellation of flights from Ireland West Airport Knock due to the plume of volcanic ash over Irish airspace. However by Thursday morning operations had resumed after the Irish Aviation Authority were informed that volcanic ash in the atmosphere, from the Icelandic volcano, had stabilised.

Unlike the chaos that descended on Europe two weeks ago, when all airspace was closed, on Tuesday it was only Irish airspace and parts of British airspace which was affected, which forced the cancellation of a total of five flights at IWAK from air carriers Ryanair, Aer Lingus, and Aer Arann.

However there could be further travel disruption in the coming weeks as the IAA continues to monitor the location of the ash cloud and whether it poses a threat for passengers and crews in Irish air space. Donal Healy, marketing executive with IWAK, said that any passengers whose flights were cancelled due to the ash should contact their airlines as they are entitled to a free re-book. Mr Healy also advised passengers to keep an eye on www.irelandwestairport.com over the coming weeks for updates of any further disruption.
