In a busy weekend at the club, Martin Foley was the winner of the Stableford competition on Saturday with a score of 44pts, he finished four points ahead of Stephen Doherty. In Sunday’s competition sponsored by Coleman Electrics, Michael Tighe won out with a score of 42pts, Kenneth Sheridan came second thanks to a strong back nine finishing up with a score of 39 pts, with Robert Devrin taking third place and John Muldoon fourth.
Claremorris
Last weekend in the Albany sponsored day, Brian Cavanagh was the winner with a score of 40 pts. Stephen Burke’s score of 39pts was enough to win the cat 1 section, with Sean Kenna taking the cat 2 prize and Frank Gibbons the cat 4. In the ladies’ section of the competition Mary McGing won with a score of 45 points with Rebbeca Kean coming home in second place on 42 pts.
Mulranny
In last Sunday’s competition sponsored by Rocky’s bar, Castlebar, Richard Quinn was the winner with a score of 42pts, Tom Duffy came home in second place on 38pts, with JJ Kelly a further two points back in third place. This Saturday will be the S Daly memorial tournament and a time sheet will be in operation, you should call Mary on 086 168 3894 or Willie on 087 2865811 to book your slot. On Sunday the competition will be sponsored by Hynes Shoes, Castlebar.
Westport
Paddy Hopkins was the guest of honour at a special evening in the club on Friday last to celebrate his 90th birthday, a large number of members and friends were in attendance. Club captain John Collins was the master of ceremonies on the evening, where a number of speakers paid tribute to Paddy for his involvement in the early years of the Westport Tourism Association as well as his well documented involvement in local environmental issues over the years, especially his successful efforts in preventing a proposed mining venture on Croagh Patrick. In reply, Paddy sincerely thanked all those in attendance for their good wishes and informed the gathering that he was confident of getting his handicap back to single figures by the end of the season.
The April golfers of the month were announced over the weekend and there were no surprises to report: Gent: Joe Kelly; Lady: Bernadette Bergin; Senior lady: Gretta Murphy; Senior gent: Dave Newton; Junior: Sam Gillivan. Tony Bree won the junior scratch cup on Sunday last. He had one shot to spare over Ronan Hehir from Shannon. David Scott also got into the prizes with a fine 78.
