€36.6 million investment in water and sewerage schemes

Major water and sewerage schemes in Mayo are set to go to construction in 2010 after Minister of State Dara Calleary announced funding in excess of €36 million for seven projects.

“The Minister for Environment, Heritage and Local Government has confirmed to me that five major projects, to commence construction in 2010, have been allocated funding of almost €37 million,” Minister Calleary said.

The Belmullet, Foxford, and Charlestown sewerage schemes have been allocated €14.3 million for network and wastewater treatment plants; the Cong Water Supply Scheme, providing a connection to the Lough Mask Regional Water Supply Scheme, has been allocated €1 million; the Killala Sewerage Scheme has been allocated €5.1 million; Lough Mask Regional Water Supply Scheme (water treatment plant upgrade ) has been allocated €10 million; and water conservation stage 3 works – Water mains Rehabilitation Project has been allocated €6.26 million.

“This is a very significant investment in water and sewerage projects in the county and I am delighted that the Belmullet, Foxford, Charlestown, Lough Mask, Cong, and Killala schemes are now going to go to construction,” Minister Calleary added. “I have been campaigning vigourosly for these schemes for some time now and I wish to pay tribute to the local county councillors, past and present, who have strongly supported these representations.”
