The green light has been given for a new Gaelscoil na Cruaiche in Westport, Beverley Flynn TD has been informed.
The Mayo deputy has confirmed that the award of the contract has been made to the preferred bidder, and the formal letter of acceptance is ready for issue.
Deputy Flynn said that the confirmation of Gaelscoil na Cruaiche is a welcome announcement for all those who have worked so hard to get a permanent home for the Gaelscoil.
“I am delighted for the pupils, parents, and the staff, who have waited and worked towards this development,” she said. “I am also delighted that this project will provide employment in the locality.”
The contract will be for a 10 classroom school, to be located on Golf Course Road, together with GP hall and ancillary facilities.
According to the Fianna Fáil deputy there were many who doubted that the Gaelscoil would become a reality, and who tried to “belittle the Government commitment to the provision of the new school”.
“I am pleased to be able to welcome the announcement by the Minister for Education and Skills, Mary Coughlan, that the contract is ready to be rolled out, and I look forward to seeing the project completed by next year. I would also like to acknowledge the input of Cllr Margaret Adams and of Cllr Brendan Mulroy who is a member of the Gaelscoil na Cruaiche Parents' Association, for working with me in securing this positive outcome for the school,” she said.
Dep Flynn said that the Gaelscoil announcement, coming so soon after confirmation of a major extension to Davitt College in Castlebar, was proof of the commitment to development in Mayo.
