Mayo Fighters secure Irish Title shots

Boxing

Ballyhaunis’ John “The Warrior” Waldron and Ballinrobe’s Michael “The Storm” Sweeny have secured Irish title fights on the under card of Andy Lee’s fight with an as yet unnamed opponent at the University Arena Limerick, on May 15. If successful they will be Mayo’s first professional champions.

Michael Sweeny takes on Dublin’s Ian Timms for the Cruiser-weight title over 10 three-minute rounds. This will be a tough fight for Sweeny, even though going in to the fight he will be favoured to win. Timms has won national senior amateur titles and has a seven-fight undefeated professional record. Sweeny has a 10-fight record with eight wins, a solitary defeat and one draw. Sweeny has come into his own in the professional game and is confident enough to look ahead of Timms and has scheduled a fight for June 25 in Las Vegas against the United States Robbie "the Taz Mexican Devil" Tovar.

Johnny “The Warrior” Waldron fights Limerick slugger Jamie Power for the Irish professional light-heavyweight title also over 10 three-minute rounds. Waldron and Power have one common opponent, the tough Latvian champ Martin Kulkulis, whom both men defeated by the same margin. Both men have tasted defeat. However, the only one to be beaten convincingly was Power, when he was knocked out in three by our other Mayo title challenger Michael “The Storm” Sweeney in November of last year.
